Thirty-plus Years

A journey, measured in communities.

Four chapters, three generations, one continuous commitment to the place we call home.

Era I · Foundation

A handful of units. A family name on the door.

Whitney Griffin founds Olympic in Fife with a small multifamily portfolio, managed out of a converted bedroom office, with one simple rule: every decision begins with the question an owner would ask.

1992

Era II · Strategic Growth

From South Sound to the full Puget Sound.

The portfolio reaches across King, Pierce, Thurston, and Kitsap counties. The second Griffin generation joins the firm. On-site teams grow, back-office systems modernize, the owner’s-mindset culture scales without losing its voice.

Era III · Regional Recognition

From a family firm to a Pacific Northwest institution.

Olympic earns Approved LIHTC and Approved HUD management status. CPM, CPA, and Designated Broker credentials are brought in-house. The team grows past 200,  but the walking-every-asset ritual never changes. The principals still know every community by name.

Era IV · Legacy Meets Technology

Three generations. A modern platform. One mindset.

Real-time financial dashboards, 24/7 resident portals, automated compliance workflows,  built in-house and deployed across 114+ communities. The third Griffin generation takes operational leadership, carrying the founding ethic forward: modern tools, same standard.

Legacy

From ice to fuel, to ski resorts and real estate, the Griffin story reflects continuous reinvention across generations.

Built on an entrepreneurial heritage and a long-term ownership mindset, the family has consistently focused on creating, operating, and holding assets with discipline, patience, and an unwavering commitment to the region it calls home.

The Griffin Story

From a single trade to a regional portfolio.

Six chapters, several generations, one continuous commitment to the Pacific Northwest.

01

The Early Years · through the 1970s

Expansion into real estate.

The family’s roots trace back to the ice trade in Tacoma, a business that evolved into fuel distribution through the Griffin Fuel Company. That same entrepreneurial instinct carried into regional development, including involvement with the Alpental Ski Resort, and in the 1970s a member of the family helped start the Seattle Aquarium.

Each venture built on the last. This habit of creating, adapting, and reinventing across industries became a lasting legacy and set the stage for the ventures still to come.

The Griffin Companies Era

Origins & early foundations.

Under the name Griffin Companies, the family began overseeing apartments and coordinating third-party management firms. It quickly became clear that many of those firms fell short of the standard the family expected, revealing a need for a stronger, more accountable approach, and leading the firm to build its own fee-management property management capabilities.

During this period, Whitney Griffin partnered with his father, Jim Griffin, author of How to Make Money in Commercial Real Estate focusing on apartments and retirement communities, while his brother, Scott Griffin, went on to develop more than 3,000 homes. Over time, those capabilities grew steadily more hands-on, structured, and refined.

Diversification

Growth & diversification.

A retirement-focused real estate business took shape, centered on acquiring and rehabbing communities. The portfolio grew from a handful of properties to a peak of roughly twelve retirement communities, with investments reaching beyond the region including a property built in Missouri and the development of farm homes.

Signature Properties

Signature properties &
regional ties.

Among the family’s notable holdings is the historic Leopold Hotel in Bellingham. Through every chapter of expansion, the family’s ties to the Pacific Northwest remained the constant, the anchor that kept the business rooted in the region it knew best.

From Griffin Companies to Olympic

Transition & evolution.

As priorities shifted, the retirement properties were gradually sold while still under Griffin Companies, marking a clear turn in focus. From there, Griffin Companies evolved into Olympic Multi-Family Management, owned solely by Whitney Griffin, with a sharpened emphasis on multi-family apartment communities. Over the following decades the company expanded across the Pacific Northwest to manage roughly 4,000 units.

Early 2020s → Today

Next generation & rebranding.

In the early 2020s, Whitney Griffin’s two sons, daughter, and nephew joined the company, a generational handoff that brought renewed energy to a decades-old foundation. With them, the business was rebranded as Olympic Multi-Family Management, signaling a fresh vision while carrying the family legacy into its next chapter.

Today, the company manages over 7,000 units, reflecting its continued growth and a strong, lasting presence across the Pacific Northwest.
